The Course Structure
The course is structured for the ongoing needs of students aged
between 2 and 10 years.
Children are taught in small groups: 4 or 5 children in the 2 to 3
year old age bracket, with a parent present, and 6 children where
the students are 4 years or older.
Up to 4 years of age, children are taught to:
- Read and understand rhythm
- Respond to form and phrasing through movement
- Develop an appreciation for a variety of musical styles
- Develop in tune singing and their vocal range, through the use
of carefully chosen songs
- Sight sing
- Develop an acquaintance with a great variety of tuned and
untuned percussion instruments
At 4 years and older, the children learn to:
- Build on the experiences already listed
- Develop ensemble expertise
- Read traditional notation and scores
- Perform quite complex arrangements for tuned and untuned
percussion
- instruments and the range of recorders
Older children have the opportunity to:
- Form ensembles with their chosen instruments
- Develop their musicianship and theoretical knowledge in more
sophisticated ways
- Build on improvisation skills
- Benefit from more frequent performance opportunities
Personal Attention
The course adjusts to suit the needs of individual classes and
therefore can accommodate older beginners and children of varying
skills. The more advanced classes can become ensembles of various
orchestral instruments as the children develop
